“It is important to consider the environmental justice impacts of implementing these projects, in addition to benefits for salmon. This map utilizes the Department of Health’s Washington Tracking Network tool, which ranks the cumulative risk each neighborhood in Washington faces from environmental factors that influence health outcomes. The ranking assesses both exposure to pollution as well as living and economic conditions that increase health risks. Each area receives a rank from 1 (low) to 10 (high).
On this map, salmon recovery projects are assessed based on whether they are located in communities with higher health disparities ranking, and if they are expected to create human health benefits. Projects in the most highly impacted communities (9-10) and with expected health benefits are shown in red. Projects with expected health benefits in any other area are shown in yellow. Projects without expected human health benefits that are located in areas ranked 6-8 are shown in green, and those in areas ranked 1-5 are shown in purple.” |
